Emotional Support Animals
The Best Emotional Support
Millions of people all over the world love their animals. In my Colorado neighborhood I see at least 20 different dogs out walking with their owners every evening. My Cavapoo, Leilah, is the socialite of the neighborhood and knows every single one! Of course, we all love our animals and couldn’t imagine life without them for they mean the world to us.
Some people who struggle with various levels of mental health problems, have found that it’s vital to have an emotional support animal to help them regulate their emotions on a day to day basis. They are not trained service animals, however, many of them are very intuitive to mental health needs naturally. They will bond with their owners in a special way that is often surprising. I’ve had clients over the years who describe their pets as one of the most important beings in their lives. I believe this is due to the ability of animals to sense the emotional needs of humans and some have learned how to comfort their owners in a special way when they become distressed.
They will respond to a simple tear or withdrawal by coming immediately, and depending on the situation, will sit near-by, or paw at their owner, or push to cuddle in order to comfort. The comfort of this animal has helped people pause when they are beginning to get upset and as a result of their comfort, an escalation of feelings will decrease. These clients have described being able to live more fully knowing this animal is in their life.
I believe that there is no reason for anyone to be alone in their struggle when there are special pets who understand on some level. These special animals will comfort at a moments notice given the chance. Sometimes just a loving stroke of fur or a cuddle can make a huge difference in the emotional state of someone struggling with their mental health. If you are struggling with your own mental health and can afford a loving, intuitive pet, I highly recommend it!
